THE DIARY OF A DELICIOUSLY PLUMP WOMAN

Bird

The novel moves along three parallel lines: (1) Throughout everything, she worries about her figure, watches her weight, and even welcomes food shortages because they help her to keep it down;(2) Impatient with her husband and his friends who engage in endless political and strategic discussions and forecasts, and are wrong every time; (3) A growing resentment of most men, especially politicians and army officers, on all sides, whom she sees as conspiring against all women whose main desire is a peaceful home and family. (The author of the diary and her husband had decided to wait with their first child until the end of the war, believing at first that it would only last a few weeks.
